Mancini, Henry (1924-1994).

Compositor estadounidense nacido el 16 de abril de 1924 en Cleveland (Ohio) y fallecido el 14 de junio de 1994 en Los Angeles (California)

Nacido en el seno de una familia italoamericana, su verdadero nombre era Enrico Nicola Mancini. Recibió su primera formación musical en el Carnegie Institute of Technology, en Pittsburgh (Pensilvania), y posteriormente se trasladó a la Juilliard Graduate School of Music, en Nueva York, donde adquirió destreza como compositor. Pese a la orientación clásica de sus estudios, se sintió tempranamente inclinado hacia el jazz, preferencia que pudo demostrar como pianista de la Glenn Miller Orchestra, cuando ésta era dirigida por Tex Beneke.

Mancini se mantuvo en la mencionada orquesta desde el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta 1952, fecha de su ingreso en el departamento musical de la compañía Universal Pictures, donde completó numerosas partituras cinematográficas. En 1958 compuso la banda sonora de la teleserie Peter Gunn, dirigida por Blake Edwards. Dicha composición, inspirada por el estilo jazzístico de las grandes orquestas, cautivó a la audiencia y marcó una nueva etapa profesional para el músico estadounidense.

Con espíritu heterodoxo, Mancini integró en su estilo elementos de la música latina, el rock y el pop, para desarrollar partituras tan notables como las de Sed de mal (1958), de Orson Welles; ¡Hatari! (1961), de Howard Hawks; y Dos en la carretera (1967), de Stanley Donen. El filme Desayuno con diamantes (1961), de Blake Edwards, le proporcionó dos Oscar de la Academia de Hollywood, uno por la música orquestal y el otro por su canción “Moon River”. Un año después volvería a recibir ese mismo premio por su trabajo musical en otra película de Edwards, Días de vino y rosas.

La colaboración entre Mancini y Edwards se prolongó a lo largo de veintisiete largometrajes. Uno de los más conocidos, La pantera rosa (1964), supuso un gran éxito para el compositor. Su banda sonora se convirtió en un éxito de ventas y además originó un proyecto ambicioso: a las secuelas cinematográficas de dicho título vino a sumarse la extensa serie de mediometrajes y cortometrajes de animación que, inspirados por los títulos de crédito de la película, llegaron al cine y la televisión. En todos los casos, fue el propio Mancini quien compuso la música a partir de arreglos del conocido tema central.

Otros proyectos de Edwards, como La carrera del siglo (1965), Darling Lili (1969) o el musical ¿Víctor o Victoria? (1982), consolidaron la fama de Mancini en el campo de la música de cine. Autor extremadamente prolífico, también compuso la sintonía de numerosas teleseries, entre ellas Remington Steele y El pájaro espino. Su labor fue tan intensa que, años después de morir víctima de un cáncer, continuaron estrenándose largometrajes con su música.
